The West Bengal government on Tuesday decided to upgrade the security of the ex-Chairman of BCCI Saurav Ganguly to Z category. The government has taken the decision after the expiry of the tenure of Y security cover of Saurav Ganguly.
As per sources, Ganguly will now have 8 to 10 security personnel guarding him. According to an official, the review of the security cover has been done as per protocol. Prior to this, Ganguly received three special branch police officers and an equal number of law enforcement officers to his Behala home under the Y category security protection.
Reportedly, Ganguly is currently on move with the Delhi Daredevils team and will return to Kolkata on May 21. He will get the Z security cover the day he will be back in Kolkata.
Currently, ministers like Firhad Hakim and Moloy Ghatak are granted Z category security, while Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, C V Ananda Bose, the national secretary of the Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, and others are given Z Plus protection.
Sukanta Majumdar, BJP president in West Bengal, is also protected by the CISF and Z Plus.
Some high-risk individuals in India are given security details by the police and local administration. The category is organised into six tiers based on the perceived threat to the person: SPG, Z+ (highest level), Z, Y+, Y, and X. The President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Supreme Court and High Court Judges, Service Chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces, Governors of State, Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers, actors and other VIPs are among those who fall under this security umbrella, but this list is not exhaustive.
