In a dramatic turn of events, the apex court of India blamed the parents for rising suicides among students especially in Rajasthan’s Kota as children fail to fulfill the high expectations of parents.

Apex Court refuses to entertain petition

The bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna said, “The problem is of parents and not of coaching institutes.” Supreme Court's judge refused to entertain a petition regarding the regulations of private coaching institutes. The petition was filed based on the fact that nearly 24 suicides have been reported this year in the Kota district of Rajasthan.

The bench comprising Justice SVN Bhatti said, “Suicides are not happening because of the coaching institutes. They happen because the children cannot meet the expectations of their parents. The number of deaths could be much higher.”

Mumbai-based doctor files PIL

The apex court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a Mumbai-based doctor Aniruddha Narayan Malpani. The Doctor balmed coaching institutions for driving students to the extent, where they are forced to commit suicide. He also blamed the coaching institutions for using children as 'commodities' for their selfish gains.

The bench added, “Most of us would like not to have coaching institutes. But nowadays, the examinations have become so competitive and there is a lot of expectation from parents. Students lose out by half a mark or one mark in the competitive exams.”

The Supreme Court suggested that the petitioner to approach the Rajasthan High Court or the Central government.

Rajasthan Government's regulation

As a step to regulate the working model of private institutions, the Rajasthan Government introduced the Rajasthan Coaching Institutes (Control and Regulation) Bill, 2023, and Rajasthan Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority Bill, 2023.
