Speaking in Lok Sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gnadhi supported the Women Reservation Bill introduced by the Modi government and demanded the addition of the Other Backward Class (OBC) in the bill.

Rahul Gandhi said, “I stand in support of the Women Reservation Bill. This is another huge step in transfer of power to women by Panchayati Raj, this is another big step. The idea that you require a new census and delimitation to implement this bill is strange”.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said the Women Reservation Bill is indeed very important, but it is unclear whether it is designed not to be implemented but rather to divert attention from the Adani issue and the issue of caste-based census.

Speaking further on the subject of OBCs, Rahul urged the Modi administration to undertake the caste census as soon as possible and make public the information that was gathered during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration, which was run by the Congress from 2004 to 2014.

“There is one thing in my view that makes this bill incomplete. I think OBC reservations should have been included in this bill,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“There are also two things that seem strange to me: one is the idea that you require a new census and the second is that you require a new delimitation to implement this bill,” he added.

BJP sidelined OBC community

Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of sidelining the burning issue,”The moment the opposition raises the issue of caste census, the BJP tries to raise a new event so that the OBC community and the people of India look the other way. In my research for the speech, I took a look at the different institutions that define how our country moves forward”.

Furthermore, he added,”There are many: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhan Sabha, bureaucracy, and the press. And I look to understand what the participation of the OBC community is in these institutions”.

Rahul Gandhi also questioned why President Droupadi Murmu was absent from the events for the inauguration of the new Parliament.

The BJP government introduced the Women Resurvation Bill, which seeks a resurvation of 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies of the states and Union Territories (UTs). Although some parties have opposed the bill on voracious points, broadly all parties have supported it.
