Aam Aadmi Party Leader and Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha, on Saturday, has written a compassionate and empathetic letter to the finance minister of Government of India and urged for the hike in the special package given to the farmers due to the losses for the Rabi crops in Punjab.

According to the press release, Chadha, in the letter has drawn attention towards the plight of the farmers in Punjab. As per reports, since March 24 almost 14 lakh hectares, which is almost 40 per cent of 34.9 lakh hectares of wheat sown in Punjab during the Rabi season have left the farmers devasted due to unseasonal rain.

In the letter, he described the situation of the farmers in Punjab after the losses of crops due to high-velocity winds, hailstorms and unseasonal rainfall. Keeping their situation in mind, the chief minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann has enhanced the relief amount from Rs 12,000 per acre to Rs 15,000 for loss to crops. The initial samples of the damaged crops have also been taken, and additional steps such as the relaxation of uniform specifications for procurement of wheat as a mandate by DFPD have also been taken to help the farmers.

Taking it to Twitter, Raghav Chadha mentioned, “Unseasonal rains and hailstorms have wreaked havoc across Punjab destroying wheat crops. I visited a few farms yesterday and it was heartbreaking to listen to the grief of farmers, who work hard to put food on our plates, but will now find it difficult to feed their families. While @BhagwantMann Govt has provided record compensation to farmers, it is the Centre’s duty too to support farmers. I have written a letter to Union Finance Minister seeking a special package. Have also annexed a packet of withered wheat to enable her to understand the gravity.”

He added that the farmers of Punjab have contributed immensely to agriculture and the economy and helped the country during natural calamities. He has also urged the Centre to help the farmers of Punjab in their time of their need.

Chadha further added that the samples of the damaged crops are been sent to the finance minister to give him a glimpse of the situation on the ground and has urged for prompt action in the situation.
