This horrific incident came to light after the culprits themselves lodged a missing complaint of their daughters and later claimed that they found their dead bodies inside a trunk in the house while shifting household items.

The accused duo, identified as Sushil Mandal and his wife Manju Devi, were daily wage labourers and had allegedly given their daughters milk mixed with pesticides on Sunday. After the girls died of poisoning, they put their bodies in the truck.

The couple reported the girls, 4-year-old Kanchan, 7-year-old Sakshi, and 9-year-old Amrita, as missing the same night at the Maqsudan Police Station.

Official statements

Briefing about the case, Jalandhar Rular Senior Superintendent of Police Mukhwinder Singh Bullar said that the couple had five children and they could not afford to raise all of them together because of a poor financial situation.

Following the missing complaint, the police launched a probe and examined nearby CCTV cameras. It was confirmed that the girls had not left their house. So, they started questioning the parents of the deceased.

During the questioning, the couple admitted to poisoning their daughters due to their inability to provide for them due to poverty. They said that they could only manage to care for two children.

Based on the scenario, a case of murder has been registered and both the accused have been arrested, said SSP Bullar.
