Punjab government is continuously taking action to end gun culture.” He further added.

The murder of Punjabi musician Sidhu Moose Wala, 28, last year had drawn attention to the pervasive glorifying of firearms in Punjabi popular culture, prompting calls for regulation. The well-known artist, who boasted an impressive 8.1 million Instagram followers, was charged with encouraging gun culture since he frequently appears in videos and pictures holding firearms. Punjab Police book records of 1,343 under the Arms Act

In a special programme launched by Punjab Police on Sunday, under which the records of person booked under Arms Act were checked across the state. The operation was carried out in the wake of upcoming G20 Summit. Decisive action was carried out from 11 am to 5 pm. All police commissioners and senior superintendents were instructed to assign one team per police station to look up the whereabouts and backgrounds of those who had been arrested under the Arms Act over the previous five years but had been released on bond, parole, or had been found not guilty.

The officer involved in the operation said that the activity is done to keep a check on the influx of the illegal arms and ammunition from across the inter-state borders of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar and international borders of the area. He also said that the team of 2000 police personnels, have checked 1,343 persons, who were booked under arms acts in the last five years and out on bail or parole. During the operation, one person has been arrested.

The Punjab Police also suggested earlier this month that the nine Amritpal Singh assistants’ arm permits be cancelled, contending that the licences had only been granted for self-defense and not to provide protection for the Khalistani leader. The decision came after storming a police station in Ajnala, Punjab. Six policemen were injured in the clashes. In this case, the police have written to the administration as well.
