As per sources, the prices of the LPG cylinders have been slashed by Petroleum and oil marketing companies. The rate has been cu off by Rs 171.50 with immediate effect. After the change, the latest retail price of a 19 kg LPG commercial cylinder stands at Rs 1,856.50 in Delhi.

In April too, the companies cut down the rates by Rs 91.50 to Rs 2,028 per unit. Whereas, the Petroleum and oil marketing companies hiked the prices of gas on March 1 by Rs 350.50 per unit and domestic cylinders by Rs 50 per unit.

Last time the rates of commercial LPG cylinders were decreased was on September 1, 2022. Prior to this, prices for the 19-kg commercial cylinder were reduced by Rs 8.5 per unit on July 6.

The cost of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder for retail sale in Delhi is now Rs 1856.50. However, according to sources, there has been no change in the cost of domestic LPG cylinders. The cost of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder in Kolkata has decreased from its previous price of Rs 2,132.00 to Rs 1,960.50.

The price of 19-kg commercial cylinders in Mumbai stands at Rs 1,649.50 and in Bengaluru, it is Rs 2190.50.

The cost of domestic LPG cylinders, however, is constant. the following are the domestic petrol prices:

New Delhi Rs 1,103.00

Kolkata Rs 1,129.00

Mumbai Rs 1,102.50

Chennai Rs 1,118.50

Bangalore Rs 1,105.50

Hyderabad Rs 1,155.00

The sharp drop in crude oil prices over the past few months has sparked expectations that this may also help to lower domestic LPG cylinder pricing.

Subsidy under PM Ujjwala Yojana extended

Apart from this, the central government, in March, decided to extend the subsidy on the LPG cylinders of Rs 200 by another year. Due to the high pricing of petroleum goods on the global market, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) included this subsidy provision.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a government subsidy programme, was introduced by the Centre in May 2016 to give low-income adult women access to LPG connections without a deposit. The consumption of PMUY users has increased by 20 percent during the last two years. In the years 2019–20 and 2021–22, respectively.

As per sources, Anurag Thakur, Information and Broadcasting Minister made the extension announcement and it would benefit around 9.6 crore families. The total expenditure would be Rs 7,680 crore for 2023-24. The subsidy will be credited directly to the bank accounts of the eligible beneficiaries.

The move regarding the subsidy was authorised by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. According to the press release, consumers who receive PMUY support are benefiting a lot from this and are therefore encouraged to use LPG continually.
