Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, on his 122nd birth anniversary.

The Prime Minister took to Twitter to post a message in Hindi. It read, “Hundreds of salutes to the great nationalist thinker, educationist and founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary. He dedicated his life to building a strong India. His ideals and principles will continue to inspire every generation of the country.”

Syama Prasad Mukherjee was born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta. He was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha since 1939 and was instrumental in the partition of Bengal to counter the Muslim League’s effort to annex the entire state into Pakistan. He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the ruling Bharatiya Jana Party, on October 21, 1951.

Amit Shah, the Union Minister of Home Affairs, also paid his tribute to independent India’s first Commerce Minister.

His tweet, posted in Hindi, read, “Revered Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee taught from his life that nothing is greater than national interest. Be it Kashmir or Bengal, we will always be indebted to Dr. Mukherjee for his immense contribution towards the unity and integrity of the country. He paved the way for India’s progress by laying the foundation of the first industrial policy. Dr. Mukherjee’s dedication to the nation and foresight will always guide us. Millions of salutes to such a great son of the country on his birth anniversary.”

Several ministers from the ruling BJP took to Twitter to hail Mukherjee for his efforts in uniting the country after partition.

Leaders such as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya paid tributes to the nationalist leader.

BJP National President JP Nadda paid floral tributes to Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s statue in New Delhi.
