Almost three people including two Home Guards were killed and at least 20 were left injured in a clash that broke out between two groups in Haryana on Monday. The violence sparked during a religious procession in the state’s Nuh, adjoining Gurugram.

Here are 10 points on Nuh violence that happened yesterday:

  • According to the police, the Home Guards were shot dead as a mob tried to stop the religious procession in Nuh’s Khedla Mod. Mob also pelted stones and vandalised vehicles while setting fire to them. In the overnight violence, the third person was killed, said the police.
  • Notably, the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was stopped by a group of young men on the Gurugram-Alwar National Highway.
  • As the violence fueled, the mob set the government and private vehicles on fire. Towards evening, it spread to the highway, where several other cars were torched and stones were pelted at the police.
  • Approximately 2,500 people, who had come to take part in a procession in Nuh, were stranded in a temple amid the violence outside. However, they were rescued by the police later.
  • Apart from Nuh, the incident of stone-pelting and arson were also reported from parts of Palwal and Gurugram. Prohibitory orders banning large gatherings were imposed in Nuh, Gurugram, Palwal, and Faridabad after violent clashes.
  • Amid the prevailing situation in the region, Internet services have been suspended in Nuh till tomorrow to contain the ‘intense communal tension’ and stop the spread of misinformation and rumours. Further, schools, colleges and educational institutions in Gurugram and Faridabad districts will remain closed today.
  • As per the media reports, the clash was sparked by an objectionable video posted on social media by a Bajrang Dal activist. Sources said Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar and his associates had circulated the video a couple of days ago.
  • In order to maintain peace within the state, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and other leaders have urged people to maintain peace and harmony.
  • The chief minister said on Monday, “Today’s incident is unfortunate. I appeal to all the people to maintain peace in the state. The guilty will not be spared at any cost, and strictest action will be taken against them.”
  • Moreover, the police have tightened security in the state’s violence-hit districts and appealed to the leaders of the two communities to help restore peace in the region. A meeting will be held between the members of two communities in Nuh at 11 am.
