According to the latest update, the Calcutta High Court has handed over the Shibpur violence case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The violence erupted in Shibpur, Howrah district during the Ram Navami celebrations.Following the filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, a division bench chaired by acting chief justice TS Sivagnanam ordered that the West Bengal Polices investigation be turned over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Suvendu Adhikari filed a PIL asking for an NIA investigation during which it was claimed that bombs detonated.The state police must deliver to the central government within two months all the records, paperwork and data, including CCTV footage, as per a directive from the High Court of Calcutta. The National Investigation Agency will thereafter receive all the records from the Centre.Earlier on April 5, the West Bengal government was asked to submit a report on its course of action regarding the conflicts during the Ram Navami procession in Howrah by the Calcutta High Court.According to the report submitted by the police, there were two groups involved in the clashes. There might be a third party looking to profit from the circumstance. If that group is involved, a central agency must look into the matter. The state police will have a difficult time locating that. Someone would have lit the fire and started the process. You cannot identify that outside source without a central agency investigation,” the bench had said on April 10.The BJP, meanwhile, applauded the Calcutta High Courts ruling. “Welcome the Calcutta HC decision to transfer the violent incidents that happened on Ram Navami in WB to NIA,” wrote BJP State President Sukanta Majumder in a tweet.Whereas, the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of trying to initiate the communal tension during the procession. She also alleged that BJP intentionally hired goons from other states to fire the communal riots in Bengal.Violence in West Bengal and BiharOn March 30-31 this year, stones were pelted on a Ram Navami procession from the terraces of the buildings in the Shibpur area of Howrah. This led to a clash between the two communal groups, which led to violence and arson. Vehicles and shops were also torched during the attack. Clashes were later reported from Hooghly and Dalkhola districts as well. Similar incidents were also seen in Sasaram town of Rohtas Nagar. As per information, police have arrested 75 people in the raids after the clashes.
