A shocking incident unfolded in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district in broad daylight on Thursday. A 23-year-old man stabbed his former partner to death allegedly over her ending the relationship with him following which the police have arrested the man.

The deceased has been identified as Gauri (18), a resident of Adala in Vitla taluk who worked as a salesgirl at a store near Puttur bus stand, while the accused, Padmaraj (23), is a resident of Bantwal and works as a JCB driver.

The police said both the accused and the victim were in a relationship for four years. Although Gauri ended her relationship with the accused, he continued to persuade her.

On Thursday afternoon Gauri was at her workplace when the accused called her out for a chat. When the discussion turned into an argument, the victim wanted to file a complaint. Padmaraj, who left the spot in a huff, returned after a while.

Victim wanted to file complaint

The deceased was heading to the women’s police station to file a complaint of harassment against the accused but her former partner followed her and the two got into an argument which soon escalated. Gauri then tried to seek refuge at the women’s police station.

However, the assailant had allegedly managed to corner her against a wall and attacked her with a knife, slitting her throat, the police said.

An injured Gauri was first rushed to the general hospital in Puttur and then was shifted to another hospital in Mangaluru. However, the 18-year-old could not be saved and succumbed to her injuries. The SP said the accused slit her throat 3-4 times.

The accused was arrested later under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The SP said they have information that Gauri had earlier lodged a police complaint against Padmaraj over harassment and they are verifying it.

Further investigations are still underway.
