A gang of five people who allegedly sold babies to needy couples were arrested from Mumbai and one from Nashik, the police said.

The arrested accused have been identified as Irfan Khan (26), Salauddin Sayyed (23), Adil Khan (19), Taukeer Sayyed (26), and Raza Sheikh, all nabbed from Mumbai, and Samadhan Jagtap, arrested from Nashik.

According to a police official from Kurar police station, the accused allegedly tried to kidnap a two-year-old girl from Malad in Mumbai. Following the alleged kidnapping they took the little girl to Malwani and later Nashik where they wanted to sell her for ₹2 lakh, the official said on Tuesday.

When the deal did not go according to plans they got the girl back to Mumbai and left her at the Dadar railway station, he added.

The official further added that after the girl was reunited with her family, nine teams were formed to catch the accused.

The gang members have been booked under sections 363 (kidnapping), 370 (trafficking of person) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Meanwhile, further investigations are underway, he said.
