A 28-year-old man, who had been arrested in connection with a murder case, has allegedly died by suicide inside the Borivali general police lockup on Friday morning, police officials confirmed.
The man – identified as Deepak Jadhav of Borivali West – had been arrested and lodged in the Yerwada jail after he was arrested by Pune’s Bharati Vidyapeeth police in connection to a murder case.
The Borivali police were granted custody of Jadhav till July 28 in connection with an unrelated assault case by a court on Wednesday. Subsequently, he was kept at the Borivali general police lock-up. He was due to be produced before the court on Friday, but he hanged himself inside his cell before that.
“On Friday morning, Jadhav was found hanging inside Cell No. 3 with a rope. He was rushed to Shatabdi hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” a police official told the news outlet Indian Express.
The cause of the suicide is still unclear. “Further investigation is underway,” police officers told news agency ANI.
