The suspension of mobile internet and SMS services in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Sangrur, and Amritsar’s Ajnala sub-division and a few areas in Mohali has been extended by the Punjab government till Thursday noon. The department of home affairs and justice said in an order, that the ban will be lifted from the rest of the state from Tuesday noon. The curbs on mobile internet services were taken in a significant crackdown launched by the Punjab police against radical preacher Amritpal Singh and members of his gang ‘Waris Punjab De’.
The Punjab government in a notification said that mobile internet services will be operating in many cities of Punjab after noon today. However, it has been made clear in the notification, that the broadband services have not been suspended so that online banking facilities, hospital services, and other essential services do not get disrupted.
The services in the above-mentioned districts will not be banned will March 23. “All mobile internet services, all SMS services (except banking & mobile recharge), and all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except the voice call, shall continue to remain suspended in the districts Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Sangrur, Sub-Division Ainala in Amritsar, areas adjoining YPS chowk and Airport Road both in SAS Nagar, till March 23 (noon) in the interest of public safety,” the order read.
According to reports, the Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh is still on run. While his uncle Harjeet Singh and driver Harpreet Singh surrendered before police Jalandhar police on Sunday late evening. According to the Punjab police, a total of 112 arrests have been made so far, but the massive manhunt is still on to nab Amritpal Singh.
Amritpal Singh’s uncle and driver, Harjeet Singh, and many other Khalistani supporters involved have been brought to Central Jail in Dibrugarh on Tuesday. Earlier, four pro-Khalistani members were flown to Dibrugarh on Sunday and lodged in Central Jail, Dibrugarh.
Previously, the vehicles used by ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh for his escape were also seized by the Punjab police, along with the ammunition and several other vehicles. Meanwhile, the Police have also conducted the flag march in various parts of the state to maintain the law and order. A heavy police force has also been deployed outside the house of Amritpal Singh. The radical leader had been declared a fugitive by the Punjab police.
In a search operation to nab Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh, the Punjab Police is not only working on the ground but also keeping a vigil eye on social media. Police have warned people not to spread the wrong information or mislead the people, or else action against them will be taken by the police and government. According to the latest updates, Punjab Police has suspended almost 75 Twitter accounts which include Khalistani supporters, and MP of Sangrur Simranjit Singh Mann.
IG of Punjab has also appealed to people not to mislead or circulate wrong information, or else strict action will be taken against them. In response to the case, Punjab and Haryana High Court have already formed a team to monitor the social media accounts related to anti-social elements. He also said that police are in contact with the bordering states, and they are fully assisting in the case.
Meanwhile, Union Home Ministry has asked the Border Security Forces, Sashastra Seema Bal to be on alert. All seaports and airports have also been alerted. According to the sources, there is a possibility that Amritpal Singh may try to cross the India-Nepal border or International Border in Punjab. They have been asked to be alert and sensitise all personnel deployed in border posts.
