Mizoram Assembly Election Results: As the nation awaits the results of the assembly elections in five states – Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram – the Mizoram Election Commission has made a significant decision to shift the counting of votes from December 3 to December 4.

Demand for Date Change

A collective demand emerged, especially from Mizoram's political parties, to alter the counting date was already around ahead of the voting. This request stemmed from the observation that Sunday holds religious significance for the Christian community, which predominantly inhabits Mizoram.

Recognising this, all major political parties, including the BJP, Congress, and the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), expressed unanimous support for rescheduling the results announcement.

Letter to the Election Commission

A joint letter, bearing the signatures of presidents from various political parties and non-governmental organisations, was dispatched to the Election Commission, articulating the plea for a date adjustment.

The letter underscored the religious devotion of the Mizo people on Sundays, traditionally a day of worship and rest. It emphasized that official programmes are generally avoided on Sundays in Mizoram.

Inclusivity of Appeals

The political spectrum seeking the date change encompassed the ruling MNF, BJP, Congress, Zoram People's Movement, and People's Conference. Even the Mizoram Kohran Hruetute Committee (MKHC), representing influential churches in the state, joined the appeal, urging the Election Commission to accommodate the religious sentiments of the community.

Background: Single-phase Voting

Mizoram conducted voting for its 40-member Assembly in a single phase on November 7. Initially slated for December 3, the counting of votes for all five states has been adjusted in response to the shared concerns expressed by various stakeholders.

EC Flexibility: Earlier Shift in Rajasthan

This isn't the first time the Election Commission has demonstrated flexibility in response to public concerns. Previously, the date of Assembly elections in Rajasthan underwent a change. Initially set for a single-phase vote on November 23, it was rescheduled to November 25.

The rescheduled counting date in Mizoram, now on December 4, aims to respect the religious practices and sentiments of the Christian-majority state. Stay tuned for comprehensive coverage as the electoral outcomes unfold.
