The body of a 21-year-old IIT Hyderabad (IIT-H) student, who had been missing since July 18, has been recovered from the Ramakrishnapuram beach in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam, the police said on Tuesday.

The student, who has been identified as D Karthik, was a tribal resident of Miryalaguda town in Telangana’s Nalgonda district. Karthik had gone missing from his IIT-H hostel room at the Sangareddy campus on July 18, news outlet Hindustan Times quoted Sangareddy (Rural) Inspector of Police Sudhir Kumar.

After initial investigations, the police suspect that the youth may have died by suicide.

“We believe that Karthik might have jumped into the sea and his body was washed ashore on July 20,” Sangareddy Rural SI M Rajesh Naik told IndiaTimes.

According to the police, Karthik was struggling to clear three backlogs in his academia, and appeared tense and depressed, according to the hostel mates of the deceased. Police suspect that the BTech second-year student may have died by suicide by jumping into the beach under Arilova police station limits in the city.

However, Karthik’s parents said that he was a bright student, and was the first tribal youth from his village to study in an IIT.

After the police recovered the body on Tuesday morning, the parents of the deceased identified it as Karthik. The postmortem procedures have been completed, and the body will be handed over to the parents soon, the police said.

“One of the bodies was decomposed and washed ashore about 10 kilometres away from the spot where Karthik was last seen. A cell phone was found in the trousers pocket of the body and based on its IMEI number, his identify was established,” SI Naik said.

The student had gone missing on July 18, and the IIT-H warden had lodged a complaint with the Sangareddy police on July 19, citing that his parents were worried about his whereabouts.

A case under Section 174 of CrPC has been registered at the Arilova police station, and further investigation is underway regarding the case to ascertain the cause behind the tragedy.
