Stepping up the heat on the Maharashtra government over police lathi-charge on protestors demanding reservation for the Maratha community in Jalna district. A’bandh’ has been called by a Maratha outfit in Maharashtra on September 11 to condemn the recent police lathi charge against agitators.

‘Bandh’ gets the support of local leaders:

Local leaders of Sakal Maratha Morcha from the state’s opposition parties held a meeting on Saturday and they have announced their support for the ‘Bandh’. However, the local leaders have also urged the people of Thane to participate in the bandh.
The meeting included prominent figures including Suhas Desai, the city unit president of the NCP, his Shiv Sena counterpart Pradeep Shinde, Maharashtra Nirman Sena leaders Ravindra More and Avinash Jadhav, and Congress city president Vikrant Chavan.

Here’s what happened:

Earlier this month, an agitation seeking a reservation for the Maratha community at Antarwali Sarathi village in Jalna district turned violent leading to serious injuries to several people and dozens of police personnel. However, police resorted to lathi-charge and propelled tear gas shells to disperse a violent mob.
