In the hunt-down operation of the accused in the Manipur on-camera horror, where two women were paraded naked by a group of men, a seventh accused has been arrested from Thoubal district. The depressing video of the two women has drawn nationwide condemnation from all quarters.
A tribal organisation in the violence-shit state has alleged that the two women were then gang-raped in a field by the mob. On Wednesday, the day when the video surfaced and went viral, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) alleged that the incident occurred on May 4, just a day after the clashes erupted in the state, in Kangpokpi district, 35 kilometres from the state capital of Imphal.
However, the police maintain that the incident occurred in a different district, despite the First Information Report (FIR) being filed in Kangpokpi.
On Thursday, the first arrest was made by the police, a day after the video of the incident surfaced online. After which, there more arrests were made later that day. A 19-year-old was also arrested on Saturday, while the sixth person taken into custody is a minor, the police said.
Amid the Manipur tangle, the conflict in the northeastern state has rocked the proceedings of the Parliament’s monsoon session. A group of opposition MPs are staging a sit-in protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Parliament House, demanding PM Modi‘s comprehensive statement on this issue and the government to allow a debate on the ethnic clashes in the strife-torn state.
Since the monsoon session has begun, the opposition leaders have been demanding a free and unfettered debate on the Manipur issue, without any time constraints.
