The residents of Maharashtras Nagpur woke up to heavy rains and flood on Saturday after heavy rainfall lashed the city on Friday night. The National Disaster Response (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are rescuing people from flooded homes and streets.Rescue operations have rescued 180 people, including 40 students from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired, said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavi on Saturday.Fadnavis who is an MLA from shared on the social media platform X on Saturday morning about the Nagpur situation and said that he is continuously monitoring it.“There has been incessant rainfall due to which the Ambazari lake is overflowing. The low-lying area around it is affected more due to this. Other parts of the city too are affected,” said his office on X.The deputy CM later added on X that two units of NDRF and two units of SDRF, which were divided into 7 groups, had rescued 140 citizens. Several roads and residential areas have been flooded since Friday.“Water breached in Shankar Nagar, Corporation Colony, Daga Layout at 5 am itself after the retaining wall near a hospital broke, which resulted in turning the flow of flood towards the residential areas,” said officials from Nagpur Municipal Corporations (NMC) fire and emergency services department. India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Nagpur has said that “severe/moderate thunderstorm with lightning” will likely continue at isolated places in Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia districts. There is also a possibility of “intense rain at isolated places” in these areas, it said.Many localities in Wardha, as well as sections of Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Gondia, are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, the weather agency said. It is highly likely that light rain will fall in isolated areas over Amravati, Yavatmal, and Gadchiroli, it added.
