To provide better infrastructure to the people of Maharashtra, the state government has given the go-ahead to the development of a "Third Mumbai". The government's go-ahead is a significant step forward.

According to the sources, the move by the state government has been addressed keeping the growing population density and infrastructure challenges of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The proposed project is around the Navi Mumbai International Airport, connected to Mumbai via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. The new city aims to boost MMR's GDP from $140 billion to $300 billion by 2030. MMRDA and NITI Aayog collaborating on detailed planning.

Overall:

The "Third Mumbai" project holds immense potential for improving the quality of life in MMR and making it a more sustainable and vibrant region. However, successful execution will hinge on meticulous planning, transparency, and addressing environmental and social concerns effectively.

According to sources, the MMRDA and NITI Aayog, the nation's planning agency, are collaborating to take steps that would increase Mumbai's GDP from its current $140 billion to $300 billion by 2030, with the anticipated Third Mumbai playing a significant role in this process. Additionally, an economic master plan for MMR is being developed.

It is anticipated that the MTHL and Navi Mumbai International Airport will each increase India's GDP by 1%. The planned airport is anticipated to open in December of next year, which will improve regional connectivity while also relieving some of the strain on Mumbai Airport. It is anticipated that the first phase will serve 20 million passengers a year.
