A 20-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide at a Navy hostel in Mumbai while undergoing training under the Agniveer program, Mumbai police reported on Tuesday, November 28.

The deceased was identified as Aparna Nair by authorities. According to police statements, the incident occurred while Nair was training on the Indian Navy Ship (INS) Attack.

Upon receiving information, Navy doctors were promptly summoned to examine Nair. After conducting an examination, the doctors declared her dead, police said.

The Malwani Police in Mumbai has registered a case under the ADR and an investigation into the incident has commenced, ANI reported.

 

What is Agniveer program? 

 

The Agniveer program trains soldiers under the Agnipath Scheme, announced by the government on June 14, 2022. Under the scheme, Agniveer soldiers enlist for a period of four years, including six months of training and three and a half years of deployment. After their term, they can apply for continued service in the armed forces.

The police investigation into Aparna Nair's death remains ongoing. Authorities have not indicated any confirmation of the cause of death at the time of this reporting.
