In a shocking incident emerging from Maharashtra, a 57-year-old assistant commissioner of police (ACP) allegedly shot dead his wife and nephew before turning the gun on himself at his home in the Balewadi area of Pune early Monday, police officials said.

According to police officials, the deceased officer at the centre of this murder-suicide case has been identified as Bharat Gaikwad, who was at home on leave from his posting as an ACP in the Amravati district.

“A 57-year-old ACP Bharat Gaikwad was posted in Amravati and had come to his home in Pune on leave. His family was staying in a bungalow in the Baner area of Pune city. Around 3.30 AM today Gaikwad first fired a bullet on his wife and then fired on his nephew,” a police official told news agency ANI. “After firing on both he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, all three were declared death on the arrival at the hospital.”

The two victims have been identified as the ACP’s wife Moni Gaikwad (44) and nephew Deepak (35), a police official said.

The incident happened at around 3:30 AM at the ACP’s residential bungalow at Lakshman Nagar. A case is being registered at the Chaturshringi police station of Pune.

Motive unclear as no suicide note found: Cops on Maharashtra murder-suicide

According to police officials, the policeman’s mother, two sons, and other family members were present at the residence and alerted the police after the incident.

“We have not found any suicide note and a probe is on to confirm the cause behind the incident,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Borate said, adding that further investigation into the matter is underway.
