Tensions escalated during the Kanwar yatra festivities in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa on Monday as clashes broke out among participants, with reports of stone pelting. In response to the escalating situation, the police had to resort to lathi charges to bring the mob under control.

The incident occurred as the Kanwar yatra, organised by a religious organisation, was passing through the Kaharwadi area in Khandwa. While the yatra had proceeded smoothly along the main routes of the city, a commotion erupted when it reached Kaharwadi, leading to stone pelting.

In video footage capturing the incident, the crowd was seen running in panic as the police, equipped with protective gear, took measures to control the situation.

Khandwa authorities say Kanwar Yatra situation under control after clashes

Khandwa District Collector Anup Kumar Singh assured that the situation was under control and stated that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the clashes. He mentioned that a vehicle was damaged during the altercation.

“A stampede broke out in Khandwa’s Kaharwadi area after rumours of stone pelting were reported in Kanwar Yatra. Video footage of the entire incident will be checked. If any accused is found doing any act in the video footage, strict action will be taken against him. The situation is completely under control, and traffic has become normal in the city. We will assess the situation and take further action,” the Collector said.

The district administration urged the public not to believe or spread rumours and assured that there were no reported casualties from the clashes. Authorities stated that the police would carefully examine the video footage of the clashes to investigate the incident thoroughly.
