The Kolkata Police have arrested two more people in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Jadavpur University student earlier this week, which is suspected to have resulted from severe ragging.

The arrested individuals are identified as Deepshekhar Dutta, a second-year economics student, and Manotosh Ghosh, a second-year sociology student, both of whom are believed to have played a role in the events leading to the student’s death.

Prior to these arrests, the police had detained an ex-student of the university, Sourabh Chowdhury, who was discovered living in the hostel without authorisation. The investigations revealed that Chowdhury completed his MSc in Mathematics in 2022., and he was remanded in police custody until August 22.

Investigations show Jadavpur University student ragged, forced to strip

The initial findings of the inquiry suggest that the victim, Swapnadip Kundu, was subjected to intense ragging, with sources indicating that a potential angle of sexual harassment is also being explored by the police. According to statements, social media posts have emerged pointing to instances of lewd comments and coerced participation in sexual acts, including stripping, during ragging.

Swapnadip Kundu, a first-year undergraduate student of Bengali (Honours), fell from the balcony of the main hostel building in the university on August 9, around 11:45 PM. Despite being rushed to the KPC Medical College and Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries at 4:30 AM on Thursday.

Swapnadip’s uncle, Arup Kundu, shared his final communication with his mother, revealing his emotional state. “Swapnadip spoke to his mother on Wednesday evening and told her he was not feeling good and was scared. His mother asked him what had happened and he said, ‘You please come fast. I have lots of things to tell you.’ When she called him back, the calls went unanswered. About an hour later, his parents got a call asking them to come to Kolkata as their son had suffered a fall.”

“The body was completely covered but the doctor showed me a piece of paper which indicated injury marks on his body. How does this happen if it was not ragging?” he asked.

The victim’s father, Ramprasad Kundu, filed a police complaint, alleging that certain hostel boarders were responsible for his son’s tragic death.

“I received a call from a student at 10.05pm. He said, ‘Sir, a student is being politicised. Some groups are trying to convince him not to stay in the hostel. That if he wants to stay in the hostel he will have to jump from the second and third floor’,” Rajat Ray, dean of the students, told the news outlet The Telegraph.

In addition to these accounts, a Facebook post by Swapnadip’s classmate, Arpan Majhi, surfaced, shedding light on the alleged involvement of ‘some seniors’ in the case.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose met with Kundu’s parents at the Javadpur University campus on Thursday and assured them of strict actions against the culprits.
