Zika virus alert: Karnataka detects first case – Here's all you need to know

Chikkaballapura: In a rapid response to the detection of the Zika virus in a mosquito pool from Talakayabetta Village in Chikkaballapura District, the Health and Family Welfare Department in Karnataka issued a critical advisory. The alert, which underscores the urgency of the situation, seeks to prevent the virus's spread through essential measures at the field level.

The Zika virus, a mosquito-borne infection, has been identified in Chikkaballapura, prompting immediate action from the state's health department. With an emphasis on curbing further transmission, the department has advised local health authorities to implement measures promptly.

Supervision by district administration

In response to the advisory, the District Administration has been entrusted with overseeing its execution, ensuring a coordinated effort to combat the Zika virus's potential spread.

Key measures in place

The advisory has laid out several critical measures, each playing a crucial role in containing the virus:

1. Testing Serum Samples: Individuals displaying symptoms such as red eyes, headache, rashes, muscle and joint pain persisting for two to seven days should have their serum samples sent to the National Institute Of Virology (NIV) in Bengaluru for testing.
2. Testing Family Members: In the event of a positive Zika virus diagnosis, samples from the patient's family members must also be collected and sent to the NIV for testing.
3. Mosquito Control: Given the Zika virus's transmission through Aedes mosquitos, effective measures to control mosquito breeding sources are paramount.

Proactive containment measures

The advisory emphasizes the need to declare a 5 km containment zone whenever a human or mosquito pool tests positive for the virus. This containment area should then undergo a meticulous house-to-house survey and a comprehensive sanitization process.

Public awareness and prevention

In addition to these stringent measures, the health department issued a crucial advisory to the general public. The public is urged to stay informed about the Zika virus without succumbing to unnecessary panic. Importantly, no human Zika virus cases have been reported in the state thus far.

Individuals exhibiting Zika-like symptoms, such as red eyes, headache, rashes, and muscle and joint pain, should promptly seek medical attention at the nearest health facility. Suspected and confirmed cases must isolate themselves, rest adequately, increase fluid intake, and use mosquito nets for added protection.

Protecting pregnant women

Pregnant women residing within the containment area are encouraged to have their serum and urine samples tested for the Zika virus, as it can potentially impact fetal health.
