A mild 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck India's Vijayapura district in Karnataka state early Friday morning, authorities have confirmed.

According to data from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake hit at 6:52 AM local time, with the epicentre located at 16.77°N 75.87°E. Tremors occurred at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres.

No immediate damage or casualties have been reported so far. NCS officials said such low-intensity quakes are common and unlikely to pose major risks.

Citizens reported feeling light shaking in parts of Vijayapura district during the brief event. Many took to social media confirming the tremors which lasted a few seconds.
