Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday, announced the withdrawal of the previous BJP government's ban on Hijabs in educational institutions. This decision comes after months of controversy and legal battles surrounding the issue.

Siddaramaiah, addressing a public rally on Friday, highlighted that clothing and dietary choices are personal matters and shouldn't be politicised. "Women can go out wearing Hijab. We should not do politics to get votes. Wear whatever dress you want, eat whatever you want, why should I care?" he stated.

Reacting to the announcement, Karnataka BJP said that Siddaramaiah is spreading the poison of religion in the state.

Karnataka BJP posted on microblogging platform X, "A uniform policy has been implemented in schools and colleges to ensure that children are equal. This has also been upheld by the Supreme Court. However, the Chief Minister is creating a difference in the minds of the school students regarding the issue of uniforms. Siddaramaiah is going to amend the constitution itself for a vote bank to appease PFI goons and minorities. In the coming days, the people themselves will teach this a lesson."

Controversy unfolds

The Hijab controversy in Karnataka erupted in January 2022 when six girls wearing Hijabs were denied entry to a government college in Udupi. This sparked protests and debates, eventually reaching the Karnataka High Court, which upheld the ban. As the matter reached into the Apex Court delivered a split verdict, leaving the High Court order in place.

Adding another layer to the ongoing issue, the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) recently imposed a dress code that effectively banned head coverings in exam halls, citing concerns about cheating. Siddaramaiah's decision to lift the Hijab ban opens a new chapter in this complex situation.
