Bengaluru, Karnataka: Karnataka's Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has made an earnest appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assistance in securing life-saving support for a 15-month-old toddler grappling with a rare disease.

CM Siddaramaiah has reached out to PM Modi, urging financial backing from the central government to fund the medical treatment of young Maurya, who is battling a severe and rare health condition known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

A Plea for a Young Life

In a heartfelt letter addressed to PM Modi, CM Siddaramaiah detailed the formidable challenge faced by Maurya's family due to the exorbitant cost of a single-dose medication called Zolgensma, which amounts to approximately INR 17.5 crore. Import taxes further amplify the financial burden, making this crucial and life-saving treatment almost inaccessible to the family.

Two Crucial Appeals

In his plea to PM Modi, Siddaramaiah has called for two significant interventions. Firstly, he has requested the Ministry of Finance to waive the import taxes on Zolgensma, making it more affordable for the child's treatment. Secondly, he has asked for consideration of monetary support from the PM CARES Fund to assist in procuring the injection.

Siddaramaiah emphasised that these compassionate measures will greatly alleviate the financial strain on Maurya's family and underscore the nation's commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its youngest citizens.

In his letter, Siddaramaiah expressed his belief that the seriousness of the situation and the life of a young child hanging in the balance necessitates collective action and support. He eagerly awaits a positive response from the Prime Minister and sincerely thanks him for his attention to this matter.
