In a prison facility located in southwest Iran, a prisoner was issued a death sentence for his crime following which, fellow inmates started a fire protest against the judgment inside the facility. As per media reports, gunshots were also heard inside the campus on Friday.

According to media reports, the riot started after the announcement of the death sentence of a prisoner in Ramhormoz prison in which prisoner protested by lighting up a fire.

However, the latest reports suggest that the protest has calmed down in the prison facility and order has been restored. According to these news reports the clashes were brief and the situation was brought under control quickly by the police officials present inside.

Extreme laws of Iran

Iran is reported to be the next country after China to issue the highest death sentences and has often faced criticism for its harsh laws.

“Iranian authorities have executed at least 173 people convicted of drug-related offences this year after systematically unfair trials, nearly three times more than this time last year,” Amnesty International said in a report in June

Iran believes that the high execution is because of the heavy drug trafficking in the country. Iran blames Afghanistan for the supply, which is the largest opium producer in the world. Tehran has, however, rejected such claims

Protests in Iran’s Zahedan

The Iranian city of Zahedan, the capital of the southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, also saw clashes between the protesters and security officials who came to mark the first anniversary of a crackdown by security forces on protesters on Friday.

Videos posted by Iran Human Rights (IHR) on social media show protesters confronting the security forces of Zahedan with apparent sounds of shooting being heard. The X post of IHR says that many are dead as Iranian authorities open fire on the peaceful protesters.

Another post also said that this incident took place one day ahead of the painful anniversary of last year’s massacre when over 100 lives were taken called “Bloody Friday”.

IHR also say that around 23 individuals were hurt, including four children in this firing.
