Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday reacted to the termination of Karan Sangwan, faculty of the ed-tech platform Unacademy and questioned their decision. Notably, the coaching institute has fired one of its tutors for urging students to vote for ‘educated candidates’ in elections.

What is the incident all about:

Karan Sangwan, a faculty of Unacademy, during a lecture without taking any name, urged the students to not put uneducated people in positions of power and vote for a literate person in the upcoming elections. However, responding to this, the ed-tech company said that the comment can be disruptive during the learning of the students and they do not allow the tutors to share their personal views in the classroom.

Is it a crime to appeal to educated people to vote: Kejriwal

Reacting to the firing of a tutor of the ed-tech company, the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said, “Is it a crime to appeal to educated people to vote? If someone is illiterate, personally I respect him. But people’s representatives cannot be illiterate. This is the era of science and technology. Illiterate public representatives can never build the modern India of 21st century.”

We have strict code of conduct: Co-founder of Unacedemy

In response to this, the co-founder of Unacedemy, Roman Saini said that class is not the place to share personal view and the incident that happened is against the code of conduct of the platform. Taking it to Twitter, Saini said, “We are an education platform that is deeply committed to imparting quality education. To do this we have in place a strict Code of Conduct for all our educators with the intention of ensuring that our learners have access to unbiased knowledge.”

“Our learners are at the centre of everything we do. The classroom is not a place to share personal opinions and views as they can wrongly influence them. In the current situation, we were forced to part ways with Karan Sangwan as he was in breach of the Code of Conduct,” he added.
