In a heartwarming incident, a brother donated his kidney to save his ailing sister’s life who was undergoing dialysis, and saved her. On the occasion of Raksha Bandha the sibling duo shared their experience.

The sibling duo has been identified as Dushyant Varkar and his sister Sheetal Bhandari, both natives of Pune, shared their experiences with a media outlet, saying that this event will remain the most memorable moment of their life.

Sheetal narrates her treatment journey

After a successful kidney transplant, Sheetal narrated the experience she went through with dialysis and said that the treatment had largely impacted her health and also called her brother’s act brave. According to her statement to the media, she said that it’s been eight years since she first had problems with her kidney.

She says that her treatment that initially was conducted in Pune was not so helpful. It was only after her sister’s recommendation that she and her family decided to shift the treatment to Hyderabad.

“My treatment started there…Doctor advised me to go for dialysis but it was so complicated and I faced health issues…It continued for 4-5 years. My husband and brother supported me all through this…Then my brother decided that it was too much and he wanted to donate the organ to me,” she said.

“The tests followed…After all results came out positive, we were given a date for surgery. The surgery was successful. My brother and I are both alright now,” said Sheetal after the successful Kidney transplant operation.

She further added, “Every sister should have a brother that can help her in any situation, I can’t express the relation between brother and sister in words”.

Brother comments on his sister’s transplant

Commenting on his sister’s health Dushyant said that Sheetal has been going through kidney problems since 2017 and was very difficult for her to go through all these treatments. He also thanked the team of doctors who were there to help them.

“Actually my sister has been facing kidney problems since 2017. The team of Dr AV Rao and Sujit Reddy helped us a lot. They have successfully transplanted my kidney to my sister,” Dushyant Varkar said.

A nephrologist at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Hyderabad Dr Sujith Reddy said that the sister did not get a cadaver kidney and thus the brother stepped in to donate his kidney. The surgery was done without any complications.

This act beautifully portrays the deep bond between siblings that the festival of Raksha Bandhan celebrates, symbolised by the sacred thread or bracelet called a Rakhi, which a sister ties around her brother’s wrist.
