Heavy rains in Nagpur since Friday night have caused serious flooding in many parts of the city, following which more than 400 people have been rescued and 4 more have died in the floods. Moreover, 70 students from a school for the speech and hearing-impaired, were rescued, said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday.

Fandavis also visited the flood ridden city to alaluyse the sitution in hand.

Flood destruction in Nagpur

According to media reports, the worst affected areas include regions near the Nag and Pili rivers and the Ambazari Lake. Several houses collapsed and roads were blocked after heavy rain in the early hours of Saturday wreaked havoc in Nagpur city and its neighbouring areas.

Four people were killed in this flood out of which two have been identified as women. One woman, identified as Meera Pilley, lost her life in Ehbab Colony while the body of another unidentified woman was washed away at Surendragarh in south Nagpur, officials said.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the collector, the municipal commissioner, and the city police commissioner to deploy multiple teams for rescuing stranded citizens, people aware of the development said. He’s also an MLA who represents Nagpur South-West assembly constituency.

Fadnavis told reporters in Mumbai that more than 400 citizens were moved to safer areas by NDRF and SDRF personnel. These include 70 students from a school for the speech and hearing impaired and 50 girls from LAD College.

He also said that an elderly woman lost he life along with 14 cattle following the heavy rains, media reports suggest.

Eknath Shinde speaks…

The Deputy CM said that the rescued people have been shifted to temporary shelters and provided food and other necessary things. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also spoke to the Nagpur collector to take stock of the situation The authorities have also been directed by the Shinde to give required facilities to people affected by the heavy rains, said the official.

The CM also directed officials to seek additional teams of NDRF and SDRF if the water level increases in the flooded areas.
