A flood victim in the Kaithal district of Haryana slapped Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) MLA Ishwar Singh on Wednesday.

JJP MLA Ishwar Singh was on a visit to Guhla city in Kaithal to ‘survey’ the flood-hit area. However, a large crowd of people formed around him, who were angry at the alleged mismanagement and the poor drainage system that has led to extensive waterlogging in the area.

A visibly angry could be seen in videos – which have gone viral on the internet – asking the legislator about the breach of a ‘bundh’ (small dam) that led to the overflowing of water from the Ghaggar River entering the area, causing floods.

During this confrontation, the woman comes forward and slaps MLA Singh, shouting “Why have you come now?” — questioning the delay of the authorities in visiting the flood-affected areas.

The MLA was rescued from the crowd by his personal security officers.

Accosted by people, forgiven woman who slapped me: Haryana JJP MLA

After the incident, MLA Singh spoke to ANI, where he claimed that he was accosted by people while he was trying to inspect the flood-affected areas in Guhla city.

He also explained the confrontation that led to him being slapped. “The woman said that had I wanted, the ‘bundh’ would not have breached. Though I explained to her that it was a natural calamity and there had been heavy rain during the past few days,” the Guhla Cheeka constituency MLA told PTI.

He revealed that he won’t be taking any legal action against the woman who slapped him, claiming that he has ‘forgiven’ her. “I don’t want any action [to be taken] for what she did. I have forgiven her,” he said.

Consistent rains since last week have caused flooding in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and even Delhi. At least 10 people have lost their lives in Haryana due to the flooding, and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar expects that toll to rise further.

“Around 10 people have died in the floods so far, but the number may increase, 2 are missing, and many cattle have died…assessment of the losses will be done. Rs 4 lakhs ex-gratia to be given to kin of dead,” CM Khattar said.
