Gujarat declares Ghol as state fish, worth its weight in gold

Hey folks, do you know that Gujarat has just declared its state fish? Yes, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has declared a Ghol fish during a two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad. This mega event was attended by several dignitaries.

Gujarat declares Ghol Fish as its state fish

Notably, Ghol fish is one of the largest fish found in India. The fish is found in the marine areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra in a golden brown colour.

For those who are unaware, this fish is just so valuable and has always been in demand because of its delicious, soft meat and air bladder. Interestingly, Ghol fish is used to make beer and wine and its air bladder is used in pharmaceuticals.

If you are a fish lover, then the meat and air bladder of the Ghol fish are sold separately, with the air bladder being exported from Mumbai.

The length of the Ghol fish is just around one-and-a-half metres. The longer the Ghol fish, the higher its price.

Here comes the shocking thing which will blow your mind, as Ghol fish per unit length can go up to Rs 5 lakh. So, if a fisherman catches Ghol fish, then he is lucky to earn millions annually.

During the two-day event in Ahmedabad, Central Minister Parsottam Rupala said that some time ago, the governments of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh also declared their respective state fish through a program organized by the Fisheries Department.
