On Tuesday, the Assam police announced their intention to carry out a fitness assessment of police officers and encourage those deemed ‘unfit’ to consider voluntary retirement from service, revealed state police chief GP Singh.

Singh, the Director General of Police (DGP), stated that the decision was aligned with the directives of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also oversees the home portfolio. He explained that a comprehensive record of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all police personnel, including those from the Indian Police Service (IPS), will be professionally maintained.

“We intend to provide a three-month grace period to all Assam police personnel, including IPS and Assam Police Service (APS) officers, until August 15. Subsequently, BMI assessments will commence within the following 15 days,” Singh announced on Twitter.

He further stated, “Individuals categorised as obese (BMI 30+) will be given an additional three months to reduce their weight (until the end of November). After that, a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) option will be offered, excluding those with genuine medical conditions such as hypothyroidism.”

Singh expressed his willingness to be the first person to undergo BMI recording on August 16.

On April 30, the chief minister made an announcement stating that police personnel who are habitual drinkers, obese, or facing corruption cases would be given the choice of either voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) or compulsory retirement scheme (CRS).

“Sarma stated that around 300 officers and personnel in the state police regularly consume alcohol, leading to physical harm. He mentioned the availability of Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) for them. Earlier, the Chief Minister had advised senior police officers to eliminate underperforming members from the force in order to enhance the overall fitness of the state police.”
