A moderate 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck India's northeastern state of Assam early Thursday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The temblor hit at 5:42 am local time with an epicentre about 40 miles (63km) north-northeast of Guwahati, Assam's largest city. It occurred at a shallow depth of around 3 miles (5km).

The NCS reported the quake was felt in Guwahati and surrounding areas. There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties. The epicentre was recorded at a depth of 5 km with a latitude of 26.63 and a longitude of 92.08, the NCS informed.

Taking to X, National Center for Seismology announced: "Earthquake of Magnitude:3.5, Occurred on 07-12-2023, 05:42:58 IST, Lat: 26.63 & Long: 92.08, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 63km NNE of Guwahati, Assam, India.”

 

Seismologists will continue to analyze seismic data from the event to better understand regional fault zones. The NCS and other authorities urged local residents to follow safety precautions in the event of potential aftershocks.\
