Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will soon commence its operations on the 4th runway. The new runway will initially be used for departures only, making it the only airport to have four runways in the country.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has put together trained Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) to manage the operations on the new runway. According to the reports, the new runway will be called ‘Runway 29 Right and 11 Left’ (29R/11L).

According to data shared by Delhi ATC, the introduction of the fourth runway will lead to an increase in flight movements, exceeding 100 flights per hour. Presently, Delhi ATC handles approximately 86 flights per hour. The airport currently operates with a three-runway system known as the northerly runway and southerly runway, designated as 27-28 North and 29 South.

According to Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), “Commissioning of Runway 29R along with associated and other Taxiways and Re-Designation of Existing Taxiways at lGlA… effective from July 13, 2O23. The Runway 11V29R is not usable for landing and will only be used for departures.”

Mumbai Airport expands security check area at T2

On July 5, Mumbai Airport also increased its capacity and expanded the security check area at T2. The additional capacity created will ensure a lower wait time for passengers. This will enhance processing capacity, reduce wait times, and provide a seamless experience to passengers.

According to the press release by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia had directed Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) to complete the expansion and upgradation in 3 Phases wherein Phase 1 has been completed on 31st March 2023, and Phase 2 on 30th June 2023. This has created additional space to increase the capacity of the terminal, ensuring ease for passengers and thereby helping reduce congestion.
