Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi has again breached the 400-mark signifying ‘severe’ conditions across various localities of the national capital on Monday, highlighting the unchecked pollution crisis engulfing the city.

Delhi AQI reaches 'severe' again

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the concentrations of harmful PM 2.5 particles at dangerously high levels, recording AQI 435 at ITO, Dwarka Sector 8 logged 402, Jahangirpuri 437 and Ashok Vihar 455.

“The pollution level in Delhi is worse, causing lung damage. I experience slight discomfort due to pollution, so people should avoid outdoor activities as levels are high,” said Dr RK Sharma, a West Delhi resident.

An AQI of 0-100 is good, 100-200 moderate, 200-300 poor, 300-400 very poor and above 400 is considered severe. Extended exposure to such noxious pollution can spark respiratory illnesses, stroke, heart attacks and other health hazards.

With air quality oscillating between poor to hazardous levels this winter, Delhi stares at a looming public health crisis in the absence of coordinated, sustained mitigation efforts across northern India’s wider pollution hotspot region.
