E-rickshaw driver dies after collision with drunk Delhi traffic officer's car

In a shocking incident, an e-rickshaw driver died after being hit by a car driver by a Delhi Traffic police officer in west Delhi’s Mayapuri area on Saturday, the police said. Locals claimed that the police officer was reportedly said to be drunk when the incident occurred.

The deceased has been identified as Amit Jha, who was a resident of Sagarpur. The accident happened in the morning, the police said.

What happened on Saturday?

As per the police, Amit was severely injured when his e-rickshaw collided with Delhi Police Officer Mukesh Kumar’s car. Then, he was immediately rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during the treatment.

Following this incident, locals staged protests outside the Mayapuri police station and blocked the road. They demanded strict action against the officer, the police said.

Case filed against accused

Taking notes from the incident, a case has been lodged against Mukesh Kumar, accused police officer under sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Kumar underwent a medical examination and was apprehended, said an officer, adding his traffic unit had been informed of further action.
