The overall air quality in Delhi continued to remain in the 'severe' category on Friday morning, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The Air Quality Index (AQI) at most monitoring stations in the city was above 400, indicating severe pollution levels.

Delhi AQI updates

The data issued by the System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR-India) the AQI across different areas in the city were as follows:

Ashok Vihar 462 (severe), Punjab Bagh 460 (severe), RK Puram 461 (severe category), ITO 464 (severe category), Gurugram 416 (severe), Faridabad 457 (severe) and Noida 375 (very poor).

However, after Delhi witnessed sudden rainfall on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, there has been a marginal dip in the Air Quality Index (AQI). The Indira Gandhi International Airport recorded an AQI of 391 (very poor) while Lodhi Road stands at 398 (very poor).

Pollution control measures of the Delhi government

The Delhi government is taking steps to combat pollution, including implementing Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This includes measures such as a ban on construction and demolition activities, restrictions on the movement of trucks and other vehicles, and water sprinkling on roads.

The government is also considering the idea of 'artificial rain' to reduce pollution levels. This is a controversial measure, with some experts expressing concerns about its potential negative impacts on the environment.

In the meantime, residents of Delhi are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the harmful effects of air pollution. This includes avoiding outdoor activities, wearing a mask when going outside, and using air purifiers in homes and offices.
