Delhi: 1 dead, another injured after shanties catch fire in Shakarpur area

According to preliminary investigation, some tyres caught fire initially, following which the flames engulfed the shanties nearby.

In east Delhi, a person died and an elderly man suffered nearly 30 per cent burn injuries after three shanties were destroyed in a fire in the Shakarpur area on Monday, said the police.

According to the police, a PCR call was received informing about the fire incident at around 8 pm at the Shakarpur police station, after which the fire department was alerted.

Taking notes from the preliminary investigation, some tyres caught fire initially, following which the flames engulfed the shanties nearby.

One Nathu Lal (62) who was sleeping inside a shanty was rescued with nearly 30 per cent burn injuries.

After the fire was doused, a charred body was recovered from one of the shanties, said the official.

"We have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire incident," the police officer added.

Further, investigation is still underway.
