An official reported on Sunday that the national capital has suffered greatly as a result of the recent record rains, with as many as 15 house collapse incidents leaving 2 dead and 7 injured.

In an interview with ANI, Atul Garg, the director of the Delhi Fire Service, acknowledged getting as many as 15 calls about incidences involving house collapse during the previous few days. He added that most of these instances had substantial and widespread waterlogging, making it difficult for the firefighters to get to the scene.

“We received 15 such calls, the most in a single day. Some old, decrepit houses and some under-construction buildings couldn’t sustain the heavy rainfall and collapsed. Further, on account of severe waterlogging, we had trouble reaching the spot,” Garg added.

Meanwhile, in another incident reported, a wall caved in at Delhi’s Sunder Nagar market due to heavy and continuous rains. However, no casualties have been reported in this incident.

In one more incident that was reported from Tis Hazari, a wall of a veterinary hospital collapsed, leaving one dead and another injured, a Delhi Fire Services official said.

In another incident, the boundary wall of a government school at Garhi Jharia Maria in the East of Kailash collapsed on Saturday due to heavy rainfall.

The education minister of Delhi informed, “Many of our schools are very old. In two of such schools, walls, walls over 35-40 years old, collapsed. Delhi received 150 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour span, which was a record in 20 years. We have instructed officers to inspect all government and MCD schools and run necessary repairs so that such incidents could be prevented.”

Call for the meeting by Delhi CM Kejriwal

The weather department has predicted more showers in the hours to come and also issued alerts for the days to follow. According to India Meteorological Department, on Sunday Delhi witnessed heavy spell of rain. Waterlogging has been reported in many areas of Delhi.
