The national capital witnessed its coldest day this winter season on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature plunging to 5.3°C, the Met Office confirmed. Delhi also recorded its lowest maximum temperature in two years at a frigid 13.4°C.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a "yellow alert" for similar harsh weather conditions on Wednesday, with the maximum temperature expected to hover around 16°C. Parts of the city saw drizzle due to the influence of western disturbances over the northern plains. Delhi's air quality remained in the "very poor" category at 343 on the AQI index.
The cold wave gripped neighbouring Uttar Pradesh even more severely, with minimum temperatures in Kanpur and Agra dipping below freezing point to 1.1°C and 1.0°C respectively.

The severe cold wave continues unabated over the north and northwest parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR, with a sharp decline in maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in Haryana and Punjab. Additionally, the mercury has plummeted to freezing levels in many parts of North India, the IMD confirmed.
The IMD predicts no possibility of relief from the severe cold for at least the next two days. Cold-day to severe cold-day conditions are likely to hammer parts of Haryana, Punjab, Western UP and Rajasthan until January 10th. The cold spell may subside only post-January 10th over isolated areas.
The weather agency also forecasts dense fog conditions persisting for a few hours in the mornings across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, UP, J&K, HP, Uttarakhand, North Rajasthan, North MP, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura until January 14th.
The IMD has issued alerts for light to moderate rainfall along with the possibility of a cyclone over the East and adjoining East Central Arabian Sea coasts. A trough extends up to South Gujarat, raising the likelihood of scattered rainfall over the next three days across coastal Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep. While light rain is expected in some places, a few areas could experience moderate showers.
