In dramatic scenes coming out of Delhi, a pilot lady and her husband were thrashed by a mob of angry locals in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka residential area on Wednesday for allegedly employing a 10-year-old girl as domestic help and subjecting her to physical abuse.
In videos that went viral on the internet, the lady, who can be seen in her pilot uniform, was dragged by the women in the mob and repeatedly hit. Her husband – who is reportedly part of an airline’s ground staff – tries to protect her from the mob, saying, “She will die…Leave her..”
The mob continues to land blows on the couple, who can be heard begging for their lives. The situation calms only after the intervention of an elderly person.
According to the cops, the 10-year-old girl was employed by the couple about two months ago. The physical abuse came to light after the girl’s relatives saw marks of injury on her face and body, and alerted the police.
As word of the physical abuse spread among the locality, an angry mob gathered around the couple’s residence at around 9:00 AM, which led to the confrontation.
“The investigation revealed that the 10-year-old girl had been working as a domestic help for the couple for the past two months. She was allegedly beaten by them. The relative of the girl noticed this today, which led to a crowd gathering at the couple’s residence and confronting/manhandling them,” Dwarka Police officials said.
The couple has been arrested by the police on charges of child labour, physical abuse, and endangerment of a minor. The domestic help has injuries on her eyes as well as burn marks on her body and arms, according to the police. She has been sent for medical examination and is receiving counselling.
“We reached the spot and found that a 10-year-old girl has been kept as domestic help by a couple. Her medical examination was conducted in which some injuries and burn marks have come to the fore. A case has been registered. Both husband and wife have been detained and are being arrested. Counselling of the child has been done,” Dwarka DCP M Harsha Vardhan told ANI.
CDP Vardhan said that there have been no accusations of sexual assault against the couple. He said that the minor girl was employed through her relative, who also works as a domestic help in a nearby household.
“Action will be taken as per the law against those seen manhandling the couple in the video,” he said.
The incident was condemned by Swati Maliwal, Chairperson, Delhi Commission for Women, who took to Twitter and wrote in Hindi, “A 10-year-old girl was kept as a domestic help by a female pilot and her husband in Delhi and was brutally tortured. An answer has been sought from Delhi Police in this matter. Strictest action should be taken against such merciless people.”
