Delhi is still witnessing an unprecedented flood situation since the Yamuna River breached its danger mark. The floods have deluged the city with water. As roads have been turned into small rivers, more than 25,000 people have been evacuated from the low-lying areas by the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and shifted to a safer place. Meanwhile, the Government of NCT chaired a press conference with several district magistrates at NDMC Convection Centre under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Ashwani Kumar, concerning the flood situation prevailed in the national capital.

Government of NCT on flood chaos in Delhi

During a press conference, an official said, “Delhi has faced an unprecedented flood level this year as compared to the previous years. Since all the rainwater from the watershed flowed into Yamuna River, the water level of Yamuna River reached a record level of 208.66 metres, as compared to the highest water level of 207.49 metres in the year 1978. Yamuna River water warning level is 204.50 and danger level is set at 205.33 metres.”

However, Yamuna’s water level is receding now as it came down to 206.72 metres on Saturday night, the official said. Also, the floodwaters in many residential colonies are receding, In some parts of the affected areas, people have started going back to their homes, they said.

44 relief camps set up

To combat the flood chaos, a total of 44 relief camps were set up with basic amenities including food, drinking water and health care facilities. 21 such relief camps are in Government Buildings, so that toilet facilities are adequate, the officials said.

Moreover, 27 ambulances were also deployed with adequate manpower and 23 others were kept on standby in case of emergency.

Over 25,000 people rescued 

In the rescue operation conducted by 18 NDRF teams, almost 25,478 people were safely evacuated from the flood-affected areas and shifted to the relief camps organised by the Delhi government. Not only humans were rescued but hundreds of animals were also among the evacuees, said the officials in the press conference.

“60 personnel and officers of the Engineering Group of Army have assisted in resolving the breach of the drain,” they added.

Government of NCT on raw water supply

Speaking about the raw water supply, the official said, “Due to consistent efforts, raw water supply from Wazirabad barrage to Okhla water treatment plant has been restored on July 14 (Friday) which was interrupted at 09:53 am on July 13. This will ensure supply of 12 MGD potable water to the city.”

Further, the Delhi Commissioner of Police has also issued instructions to all his field officers, including district administration, police, PWD, etc to facilitate the movement of essential services in affected areas, including the supply of water tankers.

They added that electricity supply is restored in many affected areas and the situation is getting improved.
