The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor for Duhai depot opens today. The Corridor connects Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut opened in the 1st phase of the project. National Capital Region Transport Corporation officials said that the corridor with all the state-of-art facilities is now functional. According to the officials, the 17 kilometres long Delhi- Ghaziabad stretch was on the priority list of India’s first RRTS, the stretch was expected to begin by the last week of the March with the focus of making it most environment friendly and commuter centric transport system.

“Duhai Depot, key to managing operations on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, is ready. State-of-the-art modern facilities for the complete care of RRTS trainsets are now functional,” an official of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) said.

The Regional Rapid Transit Sytem is a high speed train with all the state-of-art amenities, high frequency connecting the mertoplotian cities, towns and urban nodes across the NCR. The fist phase of the RRTS will include the three corridors, Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut, Delhi- Panipat and Delhi-Gurugram-Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behror-Alwar.

The estimated ridership on 82 kms long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor is 8 lakh once operational, it will also take more than 1 lakh vehicles off the roads. The execution of Delhi-Meerut corridor is expecting the increase in share of the public transportation from 37 percent to 63 percent. The semi-high-speed train will be connecting 22 stations on Delhi-Meerut corridor, which will cover the distance of 82.15 kms. The line which is developed by National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will be running at the maximum speed of 160 kms/hr and will cover the entire distance in 1 hour only.

The Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor was approved by Uttar Pradesh government in May 2017 and received the government of India’s approval in Feb 2019, after which Prime Minister of India laid its foundation in March 2019.

According to the official statement, the priority corridor with 18-km of stretch from Sahibabad- Ghaziabad-Guldhar-Duhai is functional now. DB Engineering and Consulting GmbH has been assigned the operation and maintenance of the line through a Rs 1493.08 crore contract awarded in May 2022. The 40 kilometres stretch is expected to be open by the end of this year. Initially only 13 trains will be operational and later will be increased to 30 rapid trains.

Fare: Reportedly, the corridor will have the automatic fare collection system installed. This system will automatically subtract the commuters’ fare based on the distance they have travelled. Mobility card, Open Loop Contactless card, paper tickets purchased online with QR codes will also be available. To purchase the digital tickets, they can also use NCRTC’s mobile application.

In the first phase of the project, it will also cover Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat Corridor.

Delhi-Alwar RRTS Corridor

Three sections of the Delhi-Alwar Regional Rapid Transit System’s construction will cover Delhi-Gurgaon, Gurgaon-SNB (Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behror), and SNB-Alwar. On this line, 22 stations will be constructed. This phase will cost about Rs. 37,000 crore. And by 2028, this is anticipated to be finished.

Delhi-Panipat RRTS Corridor

There will be 103 km of the Delhi-Panipat Regional Rapid Transit System Corridor. After the opening of this corridor, travellers will only need to travel 65 minutes to reach Delhi, Sonipat, and Panipat. This project is anticipated to cost a total of Rs 21,627 crore. One of the corridors included in phase 1 of the RRTS project is this one.
