Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR in connection with the incident where Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was shot at by unidentified assailants.

The FIRs have been registered based on the report filed by Manish Kumar, who was driving the car in which Azad was travelling. Police have invoked IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and the Scheduled Cast and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) Act in the reports.

Azad, a leader of the Dalit political group Aazad Samaj Party, was returning from a funeral event at a supporter’s home in Saharanpur district’s Deoband when his convoy was attacked by unknown assailants. The gunmen shot at his SUV, and a bullet grazed Azad’s abdomen.

According to Abimanyu Manglik, SP (City), Saharanpur, “The assailants were in a car and opened fire on Azad’s SUV from the right side. A bullet grazed his abdomen. He has been admitted to a hospital and his condition is stable.”

Azad was rushed to a hospital, and his condition is stable.

“The bullet grazed his stomach. His condition is stable, he is out of danger. Police will investigate the matter and will take all the necessary action,” Dr Vipin Tada, SSP Saharanpur, said.

Samajwadi Party hits out at Government over Chandrashekhar Azad Shooting

The Samajwadi Party has criticised the ruling BJP government following the shooting, questioning the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh.

Samajwadi president and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav posted a message in Hindi, saying, “The murderous attack on Mr Chandrashekhar Azad, National President of Azad Samaj Party in Deoband, Saharanpur, by criminals protected by power is a highly condemnable and cowardly act. When the people’s representatives are not safe in the BJP rule, then what will happen to the general public?”

SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav posted a similar message in Hindi that said, “The morale of the criminals in the state is so high that the chaotic elements have started breaking all their limits and boundaries. The opposition in UP is now the target of both the government and the criminals. The deadly attack on Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar is an alarm for the hollow law and order situation in the state. Wake up government!”

Chandrashekhar Azad appeals for peace and calm following shooting

After he was declared out of danger by the doctors, Chandrashekhar Azad gave an interview with ANI and appealed for peace from Bhim Army supporters.

“I did not expect such a sudden attack. I want to appeal to my friends, supporters, and workers across the country to maintain peace. We will continue our fight constitutionally. I am fine with the love and blessings of crores of people,” he said.

Azad is expected to be discharged on Thursday after routine check-ups.
