In a big move concerning opposition unity, Aam Admi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha confirmed on Sunday that the Indian National Congress (INC) will back them in the fight against the Centre’s Delhi Ordinance.

The Rajya Sabha member first broke the news when he replied to a tweet and wrote, “Congress announces its unequivocal opposition to the Delhi Ordinance.”

A few minutes later, he wrote another tweet that read, “Congress announces its unequivocal opposition to the Delhi Ordinance. This is a positive development.”

AAP likely to join oppn meet after Congress declares support

This development came after Congress general secretary KC Venugopal had told news agency PTI, “I think they [AAP] are going to join the meeting tomorrow. As for the ordinance [on control of services in Delhi], our stand is very clear. We are not going to support it.”

The move was prompted by AAP’s ultimatum that they will not join the meeting of Opposition parties – scheduled to be held on Monday in Bengaluru – until the Congress oppose the Delhi Ordinance.

After the announcement of Congress’ support, AAP is now expected to join the meeting tomorrow. They have also called a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at 4:00 PM today, which top leaders such as Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is expected to join via video conferencing.
