Chandigarh: Major commercial building ‘Berkeley’ sealed off on environmental grounds

The Chandigarh administration on Monday sealed a major commercial complex, Berkeley Square after the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) directed to seal it with immediate effect for violating several environmental norms. The directors of the firm were also asked to pay a sum of Rs 3.75 lakh as environmental compensation.

T.C Nautiyal who is a member of CPCC announced the news through a notice on Thursday. The Berkeley building has been sealed on the directions of the CPCC, said Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh.

Notice for Berkeley

The Notice issued by CPCC stated the following, “In exercise of the powers conferred under section 33 (A) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and under section 31 (A) of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and U/s 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the directions are hereby issued that M/s Berkeley Realtech Limited shall close their unit at Plot No. 24, Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh with immediate effect, that the concerned authorities shall disconnect the supply of electricity and water, to M/s Berkeley Realtech Limited at Plot No 24, Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh with immediate effect, that the concerned authorities (Sub Divisional Magistrate East, Chandigarh Administration) shall seal the unit i.e. M/s Berkeley Realtech Limited at Plot No. 24, Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh with immediate effect.”

Moreover, it was also directed that the “consent issued to M/s Berkeley Realtech Limited at Plot No. 24, Industrial Area, Phase-I, Chandigarh under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and authorisation issued under Hazardous & Other Waste (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 is hereby revoked with immediate effect.”

A compensation of Rs 3.75 lakh also has to be deposited within 15 days from the date of issue of these directions, as per the order of the National Green Tribunal.
