Nirmal Chandra Roy, a candidate from Trinamool Congress won the Dhupgiri seat from BJP’s Tapasi Roy by 4,000 seats.

According to the Election Commission of India, the contest was very close since beginning. BJP candidate was leading the first three rounds. However, by the end of fourth round the Trinamool Congress candidate took the lead. But, during the count of the fifth round again the BJP candidate took a marginal lead.

Finally, by the end of tenth round of counting Trinamool Congress was declared as winner.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal also wished the candidate for the win. Taking it to Twitter, she mentioned, “I thank the people of Dhupguri for reposing faith in us and voting decisively in our favour in the critical by-election to the Assembly constituency. People in North Bengal have been with us, and trust our strategy of growth, inclusiveness and empowerment. Bengal has shown its mandate, and soon INDIA too will show its preference. Jai Bangla! Jai INDIA!”
